11 students arrested over Mumbuni boys fire

Some 11 boys from Mumbuni Boys High School in Machakos have been arrested following a fire that destroyed part of their school dormitory.

According to Machakos County Director of Education Margaret Mwirigi, 33 students are suspected to have started the fire and 11 of them are in police custody while 22 are still under investigations. The fire was started by homemade explosives and petrol, which were found at the scene, and no casualties have been reported thus far.

On the other hand, Mwirigi added that the fire brigade, teachers and students helped put out the fire that destroyed the dormitory that housed 280 students of form 3 and 4. The education boss announced that 33 Mumbuni boys will be suspended after police investigations are complete, following the second fire in three weeks. The recent fires at Kenyan high schools have reportedly caused significant damage.

Meanwhile fire destroyed two dormitories at Katoloni Mixed day and boarding school in Machakos, causing minor injuries to 13 students.
