Bursary
Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has said that his government is committed to promoting the education sector as it was the only tool that could make a difference in Nyeri and the county at large.
Speaking during an event held outside his office grounds, in Nyeri town when he presided over the disbursement of cheques to beneficiaries of Elimu Bursary funds to 425 needy students, Kahiga said his administration was planning to increase the Elimu Bursary Funds from Sh100 to Sh150 million in the next financial year.
“My administration is committed to continue supporting the education of children from underprivileged backgrounds,” said Kahiga. He added that the Elimu Bursary Funds would enable the beneficiaries to access education and transform their lives.
He said education was indeed the key to equalizing persons, reducing poverty, and creating a sustainable planet where socio-economic transformation could be achieved. The 425 needy students were some of those who missed the funds during the last disbursement of Sh100 Million where 17,130 students benefitted.
After the main disbursement of the Elimu Bursary fund last month presided over by the Deputy Governor Warui Kinaniri, the County boss said the Department of Education and Devolution later came up with a list of the most deserving cases that were missed in the programme and who have now been brought on board.
The students who were drawn from various secondary schools, colleges, and universities received their cheques during the event. “l urges the students to maintain discipline, work hard in their schools, focus on their studies, set goals, and work towards achieving their dreams,” said Kahiga
He said parents should also bring back the receipts of their cheques from their respective institutions for accountability purposes. Also present during the event was CECMs Margaret Macharia (Education), among others.
