The Annual Legal Awareness week has been launched by the Southern Eastern branch of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) to promote free legal literacy and awareness to the public in Machakos.
According to Executive official LSK South Eastern Branch Representative Chrislero Langalanga, various advocates will be available to offer free legal aid to the public on matters such Civic Education, Civil, Criminal, Family and probate. Langalanga said that the legal awareness week which is free for all was also meant to empower individuals regarding issues involving the law in Machakos, Makueni, Garissa, Kajiado and Kitui and is to run for five days from October 28 to November 1, 2024.
“I urge everyone from the South Eastern region to come in droves to receive free legal advice from the best advocates in Machakos,” urged Langalanga. He added that the importance of the legal awareness is promoting access to justice, legal education, and addressing prison congestion and their plan is to camp at the Machakos main prison on the last day to deliver legal aid to the prisoners.
Access to justice being a fundamental right, Langalanga emphasized that the free legal aid ensures those that could not afford legal fees have access to justice which would promote equality and fairness in the legal system.
In pursuit of justice for the law income earners and creating public awareness, the legal awareness theme for this year is “Laws for people by the people; Empowering citizen participation’.
