A Kenyan power-generating firm which majors on wind power has bagged the United Nations in Kenya Person of the Year Award 2024. Craftskills Wind Energy International Limited, was recognized for its transformative work at Kipeto Wind Farm in Kajiado County, which is a renewable energy powerhouse that epitomizes innovation and sustainable practices.

The Company, founded by three Kenyans with support from international investors, established Kipeto Energy, a 100 Mega Watt onshore wind farm consisting of 60 general electric turbines.  Since 2021, Kipeto Energy has been generating power that is fed into the national grid powering approximately 250,000 households every day.

The Kipeto Project offsets 175,741 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, taking a bold stand in the fight against climate change, advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 on Climate Action.

United Nations Resident Coordinator in Kenya, Stephen Jackson, while speaking during the UN Day Celebration of 79th year since its founding in Gigiri, Nairobi, said the project not only reduces carbon emissions by 175,741 tonnes annually, but also plays a crucial role in community development and sustainable growth in Kenya.

“Kipeto Wind Farm stands as a shining example of how local innovation can tackle global challenges,” said Jackson, adding that since 2021, Kipeto Energy, has been generating power that is fed into the national grid.  Jackson said the Award brings public notice to the SDGs and to individuals or institutions whose achievements can serve as an inspiration, in keeping with the ideals of the United Nations(UN).

“Kipeto’s commitment to community engagement and sustainable development sets a high standard for responsible corporate behavior,” he said, adding that it is the second largest wind farm in Kenya.  In addition to compensating landowners for the use of their land, Kipeto Energy has established a community trust. This trust receives 5 percent of the annual profits from the operations.

Managed by community representatives, he said, the trust has the autonomy to allocate funds to local initiatives such as improving schools, hospitals, and clean water supplies. Jackson said more than 900 jobs, including 400 local jobs were created during construction and 70 local staff continue to work during the operational phase, with training for individuals to enable them access work opportunities.

“Their creation of jobs, including long-term opportunities for staff members, demonstrates their dedication to fostering economic growth,” said Jackson.  He divulged that as part of the social responsibilities, Kipeto Energy constructed and handed over 84 houses to residents who lived within 500 meters of the 60 wind turbines. “Their initiative to construct and donate houses near their project area underscores their profound impact on improving living conditions,” he said.

“I think Kipeto’s actions are a shining example of how businesses can flourish while genuinely serving the welfare of People, Planet, and Prosperity,” he said.
