Administration Police Service (APS) Bomet football club missed a golden opportunity to climb to the top of the National Super League table, settling for a goalless draw against a determined Kibera Black Stars at the Bomet IAAF Stadium over the weekend.
Currently sitting in fifth place with 8 points from four matches, APS trails league leaders 3K, who have 9 points. A victory would have propelled them to the top with 10 points. Darajani Gogo and SS Assad are listed second and third with 9 points each, while Vihiga has 8 points in fourth place.
The match began with both teams displaying caution to avoid early mistakes but struggled with ineffective striking. In the second half, Bomet head coach Evans Mafuta made three substitutions hoping to better the game’s momentum, but it proved unfruitful.
Team captain Philip Wasai had a chance to break the deadlock in the 48th minute, beating defenders and unleashing a powerful left-footed volley that struck the goalpost. After the match, Mafuta acknowledged his team’s inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities and expressed hope for improvement in their upcoming game against SS Assad at Ukunda Ground in Kwale County next Sunday.
“Many first-team players are injured, which affected our performance today. We’ve had tough away matches against Nzoia Sugar and Fortune Sacco,” he stated. Kibera Black Stars head coach Edwin Lavatsa praised his players for securing a point away from home. “While we aimed for three points, we’re satisfied with the draw. I commend my players for their solid performance, we were tactically superior to our opponents,” he said.
Lavatsa noted that his team did not play well in the first half but adjusted effectively in the second half. In other league matches, debutant Samwest Black Boots celebrated their first win, defeating Migori Youth 3-0 at Migori Stadium. League leaders 3K FC returned to form with a narrow 2-1 victory over a resilient MCF at Embu Stadium, while Darajani Gogo United triumphed 3-1 over former Kenya Premier League side Nzoia Sugar at Vapor, Ngong Ground.
In a coastal derby, Mombasa Stars fell 0-1 to SS Assad FC at Serani Playgrounds, failing to capitalize on their home advantage.
