In a bid to enhance service delivery and streamline operations across Kenya, Athletics Kenya (AK) has organised a two-day sensitization exercise to register athletes at Bomet Green Stadium
The event saw an impressive turnout, with over 200 athletes participating on the first day. According to Japhet Kemei, Secretary of AK’s South Rift Region, the new online platform aims to simplify the registration process for athletes and support personnel at all levels.
“Our system is designed for a smooth and efficient user experience. The process involves pre-registration, registration, and post-registration steps to ensure that athletes are onboarded effectively,” Kemei explained. To facilitate the registration process, athletes were required to present valid personal emails, National Identification Cards for those over 18, and original birth certificates for minors.
However, not all participants were able to complete the registration. Prisca Chebet, a 500m runner under the age category, expressed frustration after being turned away due to issues with her birth certificate. “I provided a copy of my lost birth certificate and a Maisha card waiting card, but I was still turned away. This is very disappointing for me as a young athlete,” Chebet lamented.
In contrast, Richard Koech, a coach based at the Njerian Camp, praised AK’s initiative. He emphasized that the new registration system would enhance the integrity of competitions by ensuring accurate tracking of athlete data. “Having registered myself as a coach, I can confirm that this system is beneficial. It captures all players’ and coaches’ data, making performance tracking straightforward and reliable,” Koech said.
He urged coaches and athletes to seize the opportunity to avoid future disruptions in accessing critical services from AK. “This new digital approach is essential. Embracing it now will facilitate easier service delivery,” Koech added. The new registration system promises several benefits, including performance reporting, training camp management, and access to essential documents such as visas, release letters, and passports.
Upon successful registration, athletes will receive a confirmation email to access their dashboard, track their participation, and update their details. Moreover, the system will assign each athlete a unique personal code number, aligning with World Athletics requirements to combat age cheating, doping, and other issues within the sport.
This initiative emphasizes AK’s commitment to athlete empowerment and aims to create a more accessible and conducive environment for Kenyan athletes to excel.
