Police in Migori County have impounded Bhang worth Sh20 million at the Isebania border while on transit from Tanzania.

Speaking to the press at the Isebania Police post, Migori County Police Commander Francis Nguli said nine bags of bhang with one sack of bhang stones were recovered after two of the three suspects abandoned the consignment when police ambushed them along the Isebania border.

Nguli noted that the bhang which is believed to be in transit from Tanzania was seized following intelligence provided by law enforcers from Tanzania.

The Thursday night raid also netted a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) with one bag of bhang and several bhang stones with five Tanzanian nationals who  did not have valid traveling documents.

Nguli cautioned Matatu Sacco’s operating in Migori not to engage in any illegal business or risk losing their Sacco licenses.

He, however, pointed out that they are still in pursuit of two other suspects who escaped the police dragnet using motorbikes, adding that investigations were underway to establish the real owners of the bhang and its destination.

Meanwhile, Kuria West Deputy County Commissioner Andrew Mwiti acknowledged that they have been having security meetings with their counterparts from Tanzania in an attempt to solve the trans-border illegal businesses and trade.

He urged the community living along the Isebania-Sirare border to continue providing intelligence to the border security operatives to deter the bhang trade and counterfeit businesses.

The bhang haul comes after a similar consignment was last month seized in Kuria West Sub County whose street value was Sh4.8 million.
