Extension motion

Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya (ELCK), Kisii branch has rejected a motion to extend the presidential and parliamentarians’ term tabled by Senator Samson Cherargey of Nandi County.

Bishop Joseph Omwoyo noted that the church respected democratic principles including the current five-year term set by the 2010 Constitution.

Presiding over celebrations to mark 76 years of the ELCK in Kenya, at Itierio Boys’ Secondary School in the outskirts of Kisii town, Kisii County, Sunday, Bishop Omwoyo said the five year term allowed the electorate ample time to evaluate the performance of their political representatives.

On Senator Danson Mungatana’s motion also pending in Parliament to regulate religious organizations, the bishop recommended self-regulation as opposed to legislation. Bishop Omwoyo urged the government to respect the freedom of worship as enshrined in the Constitution, claiming that the institution was a cornerstone of a free society which should not be interfered with unless through consultation.

Bonchari Constituency area MP Charles Onchoke warned that culprits of national examinations cheating would later enter into conflict with the society. He emphasized the urgent need for the candidates to stay calm and retrieve what they were taught into tangible answers.

Onchoke commended stakeholder efforts to ensure delivery of credible national exams this year that had kicked-off countrywide.
