Coffee auction sells 23,930 bags at Sh984.8 million

Farmers have continued to access millions of shillings from the sale of their coffee, with the impressive returns from the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE).

 On Tuesday in sale 21, the facility generated Sh984,853,101 after they sold 23,930 bags of coffee that the marketing agents licensed by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) collected from 939 farmers cooperatives and estates.

In the online platform that attracted 17 buyers, factories in Kirinyaga and Nyeri counties were offered impressive prices for their AA quality.

 NCE Acting Chief Executive Officer Lisper Ndung’u said the Kiamugumo factory in Kirinyaga sold a bag of coffee AA at Sh61,425 ($455) Gichatha ini factory affiliated to Gikanda cooperative society in Mathira,Nyeri sold the same at Sh 58,860($436) to Ibero Kenya.

Gakuyu ini from Thirikwa cooperative in Kirinyaga made Sh 59,535($441) per bag of 50 kilogrammes. Kiamugumo, Gakuyu ini and Gichatha ini, Ms Ndungu said in the auction the trio were represented by coffee brokers, Kirinyaga Slopes and Alliance Berries Limited.

 The two leading marketing agents delivered a total of 13,569 bags of the commodity in the auction.” The returns in the market have been impressive as on Tuesday last week NCE generated Sh 817.3 million compared to Sh984 million that was realised this week,” said Ms Ndung’u.

 Kigumo MP Joseph Munyoro and a member of Coffee Tea Parliamentary Group (Cotepa) appreciate the personnel in the coffee sector for helping the farmers through the production of the quality grades.

” The provision of the quality grades sourced by the buyers is the essence behind the impressive returns from the market,” said Munyoro. In the market, he added, the farmers delivered 5,883 bags of AA, 11,666 bags of AB and another 3,166 of grade C which is a sign of improved nurturing of the coffee trees.

In the last market, she added the cooperatives and estates had delivered 20, 281 bags at the auction saying the marketing agents licensed by the Capital Market Authority were working hard towards mobilising the coffee from the factory stores.

In the buyer’s category, C Dormans led after he bought 5,561 bags, Kenyacoff 6,277 bags, Ibero Kenya 4,047 bags, Sasini 2,850 bags and Taylor Winch 1,343 bags.
