Parliament has allocated more than Sh14 billion to light up the 290 constituencies.
The amount has been allocated to the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) for electricity to fast track connection in the financial year 2024/2025.
Each constituency will get a share of Sh 50 Million to support electric connections after the parliament endorsed the 2024/2025 Budget Policy Statement (BPS).
Budget and Appropriations Committee chairman and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro pointed out that equitable power distribution would promote economic growth countrywide.
“Electricity is a key component for economic growth, many areas of the country still lack electricity, and that motivated members to increase the allocation to Rerec…to date, when the majority of the members come to my office, they request for enhancement in rural electrification,” Nyoro said.
Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje observed that the allocation to the REREc will fund more projects and benefit the residents who have been in the dark.
He expressed concerns that Nairobi county had been sidelined in the share of the resources, as one transformer serves in excess of 10,000 people.
“In the rural set up a transformer serves a few people, a move which is unfair and needs to be corrected,” said Mwenje.
