County government distributes relief food to flood victims

The county government of Siaya is adequately prepared to cushion victims of the floods against adverse effects, area governor, James Orengo has said. Orengo said that his administration will distribute relief supplies to families that suffered the consequences of the unprecedented rains.

He was speaking at the county headquarters while flagging off a consignment of relief supplies to the affected families in West Ugenya, Usonga and West Yimbo wards.

Orengo pointed out that though the number of the displaced was less compared to last year, most of the victims had sought refuge in homes of relatives and friends while others have moved to shopping centres as they wait for the rains to subside.

He called on the residents to continue being vigilant and heed experts’ warnings to avoid loss of lives and property. Meanwhile, over 1,000 households have been affected by floods during the on-going rains, Siaya County disaster management committee has said.

The committee meeting chaired by Siaya County Commissioner, Susan Waweru was informed that the worst affected areas were West Ugenya, Usonga and West Yimbo wards where, apart from displacements, several acres of farmland have been submerged after rivers Nzoia and Yala burst their banks.

Siaya County Director of Education, Leonard Kabaki told the meeting that more than 200 toilets in primary and secondary schools have been flooded, 45 others collapsed while 244 sunk because of the floods.

He called for urgent measures to restore sanitation in schools that are set to open on Monday.
