The Elgeyo Marakwet County government has ramped up efforts to enhance agribusiness through the distribution of fruit tree and exotic tree seedlings across the region.
The initiative, part of the Financing Locally-led Climate Change Action (FLLOCA) project, aims to improve the livelihoods of local residents by promoting the cultivation of high-value crops.
On Friday, thousands of seedlings were distributed across several Wards in the county. In Kapsowar Ward, residents received 13,000 avocado seedlings and 17,500 exotic tree seedlings. Similarly, in Sambirir Ward, 6,000 coffee seedlings, 5,000 avocado seedlings, and 12,000 exotic tree seedlings were distributed.
The distribution exercise also took place in Kapchemutwa Ward, where the local Member of County Assembly (MCA) Stephen Cheruiyot joined county executive staff in overseeing the process. Commenting on the initiative, Elgeyo Marakwet County Governor Wisely Rotich praised the drive, emphasizing its potential to transform the livelihoods of county residents.

“My consistent call to every household is to set aside a quarter acre for high-value crops. We will feel the effects in the next three years,” said Governor Rotich. He noted that the seedling distribution is part of a broader strategy by the county government to bolster agribusiness and tackle climate change through sustainable agricultural practices.
Governor Rotich added that by providing residents with the resources to cultivate high-value crops, the county government hopes to enhance food security and improve economic outcomes for its citizens. He also commended county government staff, Chiefs, and their assistants for their dedication in spearheading the distribution exercise.
The distribution drive is set to continue, with teams expected to move to Cherangany-Chebororwa, Soy North, Kaptarakwa, and Tambach wards today. The remaining Wards will be covered next week, ensuring that all regions benefit from the initiative.
