Judicial workers from Embu Law Courts and advocates on Tuesday held a peaceful walk to mourn the tragic death of Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti who was shot on Thursday last week.

Carrying placards with inscriptions “Stop The Killings Judicial Lives Matters” the staff walked from the Embu Law Courts along Embu-Meru Highway to Embu Town approximately a kilometer and back where they later held prayers to mourn and condole with the family of the departed magistrate.

“We are doing this in solidarity with our fallen heroine who died in line of duty and under very unfortunate circumstances,” said Environment and Land Courts Judge Antony Kaniaru. He said this incident should serve as a wakeup call for all those concerned that the security of the judicial officers should be taken seriously.

“It did not have to happen like this but unfortunately one of us has lost her life and we would wish that no other life is lost in such circumstances,” Judge Kaniaru said. He added that the issue of security has been of concern to them for a long time and called upon those concerned with the welfare of the judiciary to give it the seriousness it deserves.

Eastern Law Society of Kenya Chair Rose Migwi said the incident highlights the long-standing security concern and security threats to judicial officers and staff in line of duty. “The saddest bit is that Monica was killed by an officer whose main obligation is to protect us,” she said.
