Five civilians are nursing serious injuries following an explosion that occurred at a hotel in Mandera County on Wednesday. Mandera County Police Commander Samuel Mutunga confirmed the incident, which took place around 12:10 pm on Wednesday.

According to Mutunga, the attacker placed a paper bag containing an improvised explosive device (IED) outside the hotel. The suspicious package was noticed by hotel workers shortly before it exploded, injuring five individuals, including some passersby.

The injured were promptly rushed to Mandera Referral Hospital for treatment. Police Commander Mutunga assured residents of their safety and pledged to continue the investigation until the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety of our community and will not rest until those responsible are held accountable,” he stated. Mandera County has experienced several attacks this year, raising concerns about threat surveillance and response capabilities.

In April, a donkey-borne IED placed outside an administration police camp in Elwak, Mandera County, claimed 12 lives and left several others injured.
