Students of Kunyak High School in Kipkelion sub-county within Kericho County celebrated the commissioning of an ultra-modern dining hall and kitchen worth over Shs 6 million which was constructed by Finlays Community Trust, an independent charitable trust.

The grand opening of the dining hall and kitchen is part of the Trust’s infrastructure pillar to support development and improve the lives of communities in Bomet and Kericho Counties.

The development comes as a huge milestone for the learners at the boarding secondary school who have for years been made to make do with their small sized dining area forcing them to eat their meals out in the open.

Kunyak High School has a population of 1,000 students all whom will now be enjoying all their meals in the newly built dining hall.

Addressing parents shortly after commissioning the infrastructure on Wednesday, the trust’s Vice Chairperson Ambassador Joshua Terer urged the learners to put the facility into good use noting that it will create a conducive environment for them to interact more and contribute to better academic performance.

Browns Plantation Kenya General Manager Corporate Affairs Mr. Sammy Kirui revealed that so far, the Trust had invested in almost Shs 600 million in 85 infrastructure projects and programs in the two counties in addition to supporting students to pursue their higher learning studies through their scholarship programs.

“This is one project valued at Shs 6,855,999.20 and we have many of such programs as we have committed our support in many areas of Kericho and Bomet counties. We have invested almost Sh600 million in 85 projects and we are now working on the 87 project. Among the projects the Trust has supported include education, water, and the environment,” said Mr. Kirui.

Among the significant projects is the construction of Chemasinge secondary school that is two streamed at a total cost of Shs 110 million, 20 laboratories, 13 classrooms, six dining halls and five dormitories.

The school’s Principal Mr. Washington Motari thanked the Trust for the construction of the multipurpose hall adding that not only will it help the learners but also the community at large.

Motari mentioned that with a population of about 1000 learners, there was not a good place to enable them gather and sit to enjoy their meal breaks in between their class work due to its small size and the heavy rains that the area experienced.

“We are now very happy as when it rains the students are now going to have their meals inside the hall and we want to thank Finlays Community Trust for the assistance.” said Motari.

Present at the event was the Kipkelion sub-county Director of Education Jackson Guyo, area MP Hilary Kosgei alias Nyiganet among other invited guests. Finlays Community Trust is funded collaboratively by both Browns Plantation Kenya, formerly James Finlay Kenya and Finlays.

Kunyak High school is a mixed boarding secondary located in Kipkelion sub-county near Koru town, a small-town center in Kisumu County.

Kericho County has 251 public secondary schools.
