Five people charged with attempts to procure abortion

Five people last Wednesday denied two charges of attempting to procure an abortion on a 17-year-old girl and causing her permanent body injuries.

Gladys Anyas, Stella Ekwenye, Jacob Ekwenye, Gabriel Ekwenye, and Alfred Wafula denied the charges before Malaba Principal Magistrate Ocharo Momanyi. Anyas and Stella, who were the first to take to the dock, were charged with attempted abortion and for causing permanent body injuries on a 17-year-old girl in Ong’aroi village, Kotur location in Teso Central Sub County.

Lawyer Florence Shiuni represented the accused in the case, which was mentioned today before Resident Magistrate Zawadi Ogange. Jacob Ekwenye, Gabriel Ekwenye, and Alfred Wafula took a fresh plea after the prosecutor Tony Rotich informed the court that the charge sheet for the trio, had been amended to include engaging in unlawful crime.

The charge sheet stated that on 10th March 2024, the three accused with others not before the court conspired to engage in unlawful crime to divert course of justice. On Wednesday, Gladys pleaded for bail, noting that she had six dependents with no guardian to take care of her defendants.

Stella, while requesting for a bond, said she had underlying conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, adding that she has a small child in school. The duo were each given a bond of sh150,000 and one surety of similar amount. Jacob, Gabriel, and, Alfred, were given a bond of sh200,000 each and a surety of similar amount.
