The idea of Kenya Women Governors Caucus G7 is to encourage and mentor other women, who are aspiring for leadership roles, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has said.

Waiguru, who is also chairs the Council of Governors(CoG), was speaking at the Machakos new City, while in the company of fellow women governors, during their two-day tour of various development projects in the county, hosted by Governor Wavinya Ndeti.

“The idea of G7 is to encourage women aspiring for leadership, show them that it can actually be done and truly demonstrate that women exemplify exceptional leadership qualities,” she said. The other governors in the entourage included Cecile Mbarire (Embu) Gladys Wanga (Homa bay) Susan Kihika (Nakuru) and Fatima Achani (Kwale).

The Kirinyaga governor said the aim of the tour was to compare notes and also exchange ideas on each other’s development projects, while at the same time seeking to empower women fraternity in the country. She lauded Wavinya’s efforts, best exemplified by the several projects she has launched for the people of Machakos, over the last two years of her tenure.

According to Waiguru, this was a clear testament that indeed women leaders are capable of breaking the long existing barriers. Waiguru specifically cited implementation of the Machakos Youth Service (MYS), aimed at empowering the local youth with various skills to encourage entrepreneurship, hence unlocking their potential.

On her part, the Nakuru governor said, “I am thankful to Wavinya for introducing MYS, which will be a game changer and will consider introducing the same in my county.” During the tour, Wavinya showcased several projects to the women leaders such as groundbreaking of the Athi River Level 5 hospital.

The host governor also led her visiting colleagues to the Machakos new city, where they laid a foundation stone for the proposed Muindi Mbingu Specialty hospital.

Additionally, Wavinya unveiled the upcoming Modern Sports Complex, set to accommodate indoor and outdoor games and training facilities for youth in the area, besides commissioning a fully equipped Gender based Violence Rescue Centre at the Machakos new city.

Meanwhile, Waiguru revealed that as governors they were fully behind the embattled governor of Meru Kawira Mwangaza, who is facing her third impeachment bid, pointing out that such challenges should not deter other women at all from vying for top positions.
