Lands and Housing Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has assured Murang’a residents the stalled Mitumbiri Sanitary landfill will be completed.
During the inspection tour of the Sh1.2 billion solid waste project funded by the World Bank, Wahome extended the completion period from June to August.
Accompanied by Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, MPs Joseph Munyoro( Kigumo) and Mary Wamaua( Maragua), she said the procurement of the equipment to enhance the process of the solid waste was at advantaged stage.
“The project was started in 2016 and it must be completed to help handle the solid waste in Murang’a county,” the CS said. She reassured Kenyans that all the stalled projects will be completed and handed over for the public use.
The project implemented by Nairobi Metropolitan Service Improvement programme (NaMSIP)) was designed to be completed on March 31, 2021 . Ms Wahome disclosed four months ago Governor Kangata had inquired from her ministry when the sanitary project that has stalled at 70 percent completion, would be handed over to the Murang’a County Government.
“The project had been delayed due to financial constraints, and only part remaining was to procure the equipment to ensure the facility is operational,” said the CS.
The government, she disclosed, has bought some equipment, and the project will be operational in the next financial year. She further assured the residents that assessment of health hazards was done to ensure the safety of the people living around the sanitary landfill.
In 2019, leaders from Murang’a including Kang’ata flew to Durban in South Africa for benchmarking on landfill operations, as the MCAs went to Arusha in Tanzania for a similar trip. Kigumo MP Munyoro requested the Muthithi market roof be redesigned to have increased space for the traders.
Kangata lauded the construction of the markets saying they will accommodate more traders and improve the livelihood of the locals.
” Once the markets are completed the county government will initiate more projects through the smart cities’ programmes,” said the governor.
