Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti on Friday joined hundreds of Catholic faithful to mark Good Friday by carrying a cross to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus.
The governor and her Deputy Francis Mwangangi led the faithful in a marching procession in Machakos town to commemorate the death of Jesus through the “Way of the
Cross” before attending a mass at the at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral Catholic church. Speaking during the mass, Wavinya appealed to Kenyans not to engage in corrupt practices saying the vice was impeding development and service delivery in the country.
The governor said as Christians, Kenyans should shun corruption as a patriotic duty to enable delivery of services by both the county and the national government.
She noted that her government had digitized revenue collection across the county as a way of curbing corruption and dissuaded residents against making payments in cash. “All county taxes are supposed to be paid through MPESA. However, some people still pay cash. Both the payer and the recipient are on the wrong because aiding corruption,” said Wavinya.
She noted that by digitising revenue collection, the County Government offer better services because there will be no embezzlement of public funds.
“I will ensure that taxes paid by residents are well utilized. Those opposing the move are the ones that plunder public resources,” said the governor. The Deputy Governor,echoed Wavinya sentiments terming corruption as a sin and asked Christians to shun it.
In his homily,Bishop Norman King’oo called on Christians to play their roles in the society as required. Bishop King’oo noted the prevailing tough times and asked Christians to emulate Jesus’ perseverance and patience.
“We are going through tribulations just like Jesus went during his crucification we should emulate him,” he said.
