Residents of Homa Bay county have been urged to take good care of their donkeys to realise the economic value of the animals and to desist from theft and wanton slaughter of the animals.

A donkey farmer Lukas Odero said he had benefited alot from rearing them for the last 20 years.

Speaking during a field day in Dhiwa Kayambo village in Kosewe ward, during which donkeys were given free treatment and vaccination, Odero said his 31 donkeys help him transport farm produce to the market and fetch water for sale to the locals.

He said that in order to maximize the donkeys’ economic value, they need to be well fed and be provided with quality health care. According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, the County has a population of over 7,000 donkeys with Suba North having the largest number.
