Human rights activists in Narok County have agreed to call off demonstrations that were to be held this week to protest over alleged increased cases of insecurity in the region.
The human rights defenders led by Professor Meitamei Ololdapash and Narok Youth Council Leader Booster Kisio had threatened to mobilize the residents to demonstrate after murder suspects were released from custody last week.
Ololdapash, whose son was killed recently was satisfied that the suspects were re-arrested and police had assured them that enough evidence to link the suspects to the murder had been gathered. Prof Ololdapash said the families that lost their dear ones were relieved that police had promised to ensure justice is served.
The five suspects had been arrested but released from custody after the 14 days granted by the court to hold them to allow investigations to be conducted elapsed. The security team led by Narok County Police Commander Riko Ngare and Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), led by Narok head Gitonga Murang’a reiterated that they have gathered enough evidence to prosecute the five.
The County police boss said the five were re-arrested after more evidence was collected to connect them to the murder case. He assured members of the public of improved security in Narok town and its environs saying most criminals who were involved in murder cases had been arrested.
Ngare called on residents to continue reporting suspicious people to the police to help in curbing crime in the region. On his part, the head of ODPP Mr Murang’a revealed that he was content with the evidence given to link the five suspects to the murder of Hilary Ololdapash.
He promised to do his work professionally so that the bereaved families get justice. The youth leader Booster Kisio called on youths to cease writing incitement messages on social media platforms and instead give the security organs ample time to arrest criminals and conduct investigations.
