Recovery of 2,658 ammunitions from a couple in Laikipia has led to the arrest of two police officers.
National Police Service Inspector General Japhet Koome said after the discovery of the ammunitions on April 18, from Josphat Karanja and his wife Teresiah Wairiumu, today the police made the arrest of Chief Inspector Joel Warui Githaiga and Constable Martin Murimi.
The two police officers attached to Anti Stock Theft Unit are based in Sondu Camp who were arrested for sale of ammunition to criminals. Koome in a communication said the four suspects were arraigned in court as the prosecution sought, they be detained for four days to assist in the investigations.
“All the four suspects will now appear before Kibera Law Court on Friday April 26, 2024, while the Officers remain suspended from the National Police Service with immediate effect,” said the IG.
The IG cautioned the public from engaging in unauthorized purchase, possession, manufacture and sale of firearms and ammunition and instead report any such criminal activities to the nearest police station.
On Friday last week, Laikipia leaders led by MPs Mwangi Kiunjuri( Laikipia East), Sarah Korere (Laikipia North) and Jane Kagiri( Laikipia County) raised concerns over the increased insecurity.
They pleaded with the government to post additional security officers and recruit more Kenya Police Reservists to deal with the bandits.
Korere said it was disheartening that some of the ammunitions used by the bandits to cause terror in the villages can be traced.
