Former Mombasa governor Hassan Joho has asked coastal political leaders to support his bid for the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) leadership position as Raila Odinga’s successor.
Joho said his position as ODM party leader will see him at the forefront in the national politics thus a voice to the coastal people in amplifying the development agenda.
The former governor’s candidacy has ignited a sense of unity among the coastal leadership, who view him as a capable and experienced leader poised to steer the party forward.
A section of coast political leaders have declared their support behind him as he bids to succeed Odinga for the party leadership position.
Led by Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir, he outlined the importance of combined efforts in solidifying Joho’s position as the frontrunner in the upcoming party leadership elections, signaling a significant shift in the political landscape of the region.
Nassir said that he has seen Joho’s leadership as a friend and believes that once given a chance he will lead the people of ODM as the good man he described him to be.
“We have fought for this party to an extent of almost losing our lives,” he said.
ODM leader Raila Odinga backed his deputies Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya to assume leadership roles within the party if his bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship is successful.
Joho who was sharing relief food for Ramadhan in Mombasa County said he has learnt from his master Odinga on courage, addressing injustices among other leadership skills, saying he is the best successor for the party.
“I stood with Raila and the people of Mombasa through thick and thin and now I urge him to stand by me. I am ready to compete with whoever that wants to run for the party leadership position,” he said.
