Residents of Theri area in Kahuro sub county, Murang’a, on Wednesday took to the streets to protest against the increasing number of bars and substandard liquor outlets in the area.
The residents who demonstrated at Kahuro town alleged that the illicit brews being sold in the areas have contributed to deaths of five local residents. The angry residents called on the relevant government apparatus to intensify efforts in combating the sale and consumption of illicit alcohol urging for intervention and closure of illegal liquor outlets operating in the area.
Mugoiri MCA Peter Munga who joined the protesters noted that the locals had made formal requests to the concerned authorities to have licenses of some of bars operating in the area revoked for violating regulations governing the sale of alcohol.
“It’s a matter of concern to see mushrooming bars in this area. From a spot check, many of the outlets have no required documents and unfortunately the illegal bars are selling substandard liquor putting lives of the consumers at risk,” said the MCA. Munga observed that they are committed to work with both relevant agencies of the national and county governments to fight against the proliferation of harmful alcohol in an effort to protect future generations.
“We request the sub county security committee to rein in the illegal outlets. There should be regular inspections of the bars operating in this area so as to ensure only the licensed outlets are allowed to operate. Those selling illicit and counterfeit liquor brands should face the law.” Opined Munga.
Kahuro Sub-County Deputy Commissioner Esther Njeri commended the residents for their efforts in tackling alcoholism and illicit brews in the area. Njeri said the role of licensing liquor outlets lies with the county government asking the residents to petition their grievances to the offices of the local county administration.
“The sub county security committee will work together with other stakeholders to crackdown bars operating illegally. On reduction of the number of outlets, that will be done by the county government. “With increased inspection, we will ensure only standard liquor brands are stocked on shelves as we also crack down on illicit brews being sneaked to this part of the county,” said Njeri.
