Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to reinstate Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers who were sacked for staging the recent strike.

Speaking at the Annual General Meeting of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Mumias Branch Saturday, Governor Barasa called on the TSC to reverse the disciplinary action and offer the affected teachers permanent and pensionable employment terms.

“We want the Teachers Service Commission to rescind the termination of contracts and recall the sacking letters sent to Junior Secondary School teachers. The measures taken are very punitive and unacceptable,” he stated. On May 22, the TSC had issued show cause letters to the striking teachers, who had downed their tools and boycotted duty. The letters demanded that the teachers explain their absence within two weeks.

A total of 10,348 teachers received the letters, with 9,606 able to respond within the stipulated time. However, 742 teachers failed to report back to work and did not provide their whereabouts, leading to the termination of their contracts and their subsequent replacement.
