With health workers’ strike causing untold suffering to hundreds, Kenyatta University Teaching Research and Referral Hospital has recalled cancer patients to complete their chemotherapy treatment.
The patients have been recalled after the referral facility has engaged services of five oncologists to attend to the sick, who have been affected by the ongoing strike.
KUTRRH Chairperson Prof Olive Mugenda said the facility managed to engage the experts from Ethiopia, Malawi and Tanzania. “Three doctors are from Ethiopia who will help the sick in the Cancer unit at the facility,” said Mugenda.
At the facility, she said 132 doctors participated in the strike, while another 82 remained in their facility rendering services. She divulged that following the strike, 45 patients who were on chemotherapy were forced to go home.
“They have since been recalled and are on treatment and another 40 who have been diagnosed with the disease are being attended to,” said the chairperson. She explained that the five will remain at the facility after their services have been approved by the Ministry of Health.
” After the strike the services of the five will remain to address the high demand for the cancer treatment at the facility,” she said.
