Charge

A 25- year-old mother of two who allegedly killed her two children before burying them in a shallow grave has denied committing the offences when arraigned before a Kericho High Court.

Brenda Cheptoo appeared before Kericho High court Judge Justice Joseph Sergon where she pleaded not guilty to the two murder counts contrary to Section 203 a read with Section 204 of the Penal Code. The charge sheet read that on July 12, 2024 at Kipkerieny village, Kabartegan location in Bureti sub-county, Kericho, she murdered her daughter aged eight years and her son aged six years old.

The accused through her defense lawyer Onesmus Towett submitted an oral application to the Prosecution Counsel pleading to be released on bond.    Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Titus Musyoki called for a pre-bail report pending the release of the accused person.

Ruling on the application, Judge Sergon said the accused would be brought back to court on November 11 when a pre-bail report would be availed to determine if the accused person could be released on suitable bail or bond terms. A psychiatric report dated 25 July 2024 showed that Cheptoo was of sound mind and fit to stand trial after she underwent a mental assessment examination at the Kericho County Referral Hospital.

The accused is currently remanded at Kericho GK women prison.
