Kiambu County Government has initiated a project for the renovation and upgrading of its various sports facilities.

In a move to enhance the sports infrastructure, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth Affairs and Sports, Ali Osman announced that the Thika, Githunguri, Kanjiru, Ruiru, Thigio and Karangari stadiums will be renovated and upgraded to promote community engagement in sports and physical activities among youth.

Speaking to KNA, Osman said that the County government has already allocated Sh250 million to Thika stadium, Sh180 million to Kanjiru, Sh30 million Ruiru, Sh26 million Githunguri and Sh21 million to Karangari.

“The planned developments will see upgrading of the perimeter wall, the establishment of a swimming pool, a borehole, spectator stands and a basketball pitch. The project aims to also create a safe and inviting environment for sports’ enthusiasts in the local community”, he said

The CECM noted that traders who are currently operating outside the stadium’s wall will be relocated as plans are underway to construct modern stores for them. The approach, he added, is to ensure that commerce continues while enhancing the sports facilities.

Osman emphasised the importance of community involvement, stating that local labour will be sourced for the construction work. “The members of County Assembly will assist in identifying locals who can participate in this initiative, providing jobs and fostering a sense of ownership among residents”, he said.

Osman added that during the planning stage of the upgrades for the said stadiums, public participation was paramount as the County government conducted extensive public participation sessions to implore feedback and ensure that local opinions were considered in developing the sports facilities.

The CECM said that some of the key features of the renovation plan is the incorporation of accessibility for individuals with disabilities (PWDs) which includes providing designated entrances with ramps and accessible washrooms, ensuring that everyone in the community can enjoy the upgraded facilities.

Osman emphasised that the renovation project at Thika stadium is set to conclude its second phase by next year, with plans to commence third phase shortly afterward. Ruiru stadium renovations is set to start in December with the expected completion date in June.

“Once completed, Thika stadium is expected to host national games, athletics events and matches from Kenya Premier League. The upgrades not only aim to improve the quality of the facilities but also to encourage more teams to participate in competitive sports,” Osman explained.

Duncan Njenga, a young enthusiast of sports who lives in Githunguri expressed joy and optimism regarding the upcoming upgrades to the stadium, stating that once completed, the new facilities will provide a safe and enjoyable environment for youth to play and hone their talents.

He noted that they have been using substandard stadiums to hone their talents but with the upgraded infrastructure, the players and community will no longer experience the dust but will also lower the risk of injuries. Njenga extended his gratitude to the Kiambu County Government for their commitment to enhancing sports facilities in the region, underscoring the positive impact these improvements will have on the community.
