Kiambu County has commenced the second phase of its Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) infrastructure overhaul, with the construction of 130 new model centres slated for the 2024–2025 financial year.
The ECDEs are expected to benefit more than 35,000 children currently enrolled in ECDE programs across the county. Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi said that they are renovating all nursery schools to create an environment that excites learners, ensuring they enjoy being in school and develop a love for education.
Additionally, Wamatangi added that the ECDE Centres will be well equipped with modern facilities to promote child development. “The Centre’s will have PP1 and PP2 classrooms, administrative offices in the middle, ablution blocks for children and teachers, as well as a play center.” Wamatangi said.
The project aligns with ongoing efforts to address disparities in education access, particularly in rural parts of Kiambu, and is expected to accommodate a growing number of children as the county continues its focus on early childhood education.
The new phase builds on the success of the first phase, which saw the construction and refurbishment of 134 ECDE centres across Kiambu. Each centre will cost an estimate of Sh3.5 million and a total cost of Sh400 million will be used to construct 134 centres.
The project is set to take three financial years to be fully completed in all 524 ECDE Centre’s present in the county. The county government plans to ensure that by the end of this phase, every ward in Kiambu will have access to at least one model ECDE centre.
