The management of Kibuye market in Kisumu County has been disbanded and reverted to the custody of the government of Kisumu County. Kisumu city manager Aballa Wanga announced the declaration following consultation with the governor of Kisumu County Prof. Anya’ng Nyong’o and top county leadership.

Wanga further announced that the election of the leadership of the market has also been postponed from the planned September date to a yet to be disclosed date and revenue collection in the market also suspended.

” I have after consultation with the governor of Kisumu and his senior administration decided to dissolve and disband the current existing market management committee and also suspended elections that were supposed to take place in September until further notice.

We have also stopped collection of revenue in Kibuye in any form including from the toilets, the collection of revenue will be done by the county government and not any Committee or individual so we have stopped the committee from collecting revenue from the toilets the county government and county staff will collect such and we are posting a seven-member committee to run the market,” declared Wanga.

The city manager issued a terse warning to brokers who have been exploiting and oppressing traders in the market in the name of providing security in the market and declared that security in the market will henceforth be handled by police at the nearby Kondele police post in liaison with the county security team even as he warned those planning to create chaos in the market of dire consequence.

“There are some militia wielding pangas and clubs purporting to be security in Kibuye, but they are illegal, the Kibuye security will be provided by the Kondele OCPD in conjunction with city askaris so anyone wielding clubs and matchettes as security will henceforth face the wrath of the law enforcement and be jailed so those sent to brood chaos in Kibuye market be warned because Kibuye market belongs to the government and must be protected” assured Aballa

Wanga noted that though they have put concerted efforts at brokering lasting peace in the market, but the efforts are yet to yield fruits being the reason why they have burned some of the activities in the market till things go back to normalcy.

“We have had countless meetings to broker peace, and just the other day, we had a peace brokering meeting and just immediately following the meeting an attack occurred in the market, where someone was hacked and is still hospitalized, with the case now at Kibuye police station, hence as from today I have dissolved the market management committee and there will be no market officials from tomorrow and there will be no elections in the market and we are going to post officials to the market including head of security, market superintendent ,head of revenue and head of environment,” added Wanga.
