KNQA Appoints New Director General

Appointment

The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) has appointed Dr Alice Wairimu Kande the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Authority for a five-year term.

Dr Kande has been the acting Director General at KNQA since December 7, 2022, following the exit of Dr Juma Mukhwana, who now serves as the Principal Secretary State Department for Industry.

Before the appointment as Acting Director General, Kande served as Deputy Director in charge of Planning, Research, Outreach and Policy at the Authority.

In a press statement sent to newsrooms, the KNQA Council Chairperson, Stanley Kiptis said Dr Kande was the successful candidate out of the 12 shortlisted candidates who were interviewed for the position that had attracted a total of 36 applicants.

The position was advertised on November 28, 2023, and the interviews commenced on Tuesday February 27, 2024, to February 28, 2024.  “Following deliberations and careful consideration, the Council appointed Dr Kande for the position,” said Kiptis.

While congratulating her on the appointment, Kiptis expressed the Council’s confidence in her leadership and hoped that she will steer the organisation well as she did on an acting capacity.

Dr Kande holds a doctorate degree in Business Admiration in Strategic Management from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, a master’s in business administration and a Bachelor of Education both from Kenyatta University.

She has been instrumental in the development of various national polices at the Authority among them the recognition of Prior Learning Policy that was launched in March this year by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, she coordinated the development of Kenya Credit Accumulation and Transfer System and the Registration and Accreditation Policy Framework.
