Kenya Power Company (KPC) has rolled out a campaign targeting to upgrade 7.4 million pre-paid meters in a bid to streamline its services. The initiative dubbed ‘update Meter yako’, seeks to upgrade token devices to new vending platforms by August 31.
KPC Nyanza Regional customer experience officer, Alex Amboko said that the upgrading aligns with the ongoing update of all prepaid meters that use the standard transfer specification to ensure secure messaging system. “All prepaid meters that will not have been updated by the deadline date will stop accepting the token codes,” he said during an interview with KNA.
He added that they internally launched a free prepaid meter’s update which initially had 24 bits and is to be upgraded to 192 bits in the new system, which is a better encoding system that will be difficult to hack.
“The old meter had 20 digits’ code and this is to be increased to 60 digits. The first 20 digits in the new update will be for resetting the second 20 digits for upgrading and the last 20 digits for loading the tokens, after which the process will be as usual, he explained the update procedure.
He urged customers to be positive and embrace the transition by following the simple process. This is where they expect positivity from their customers since it’s a simple process. Amboki advised that customers who buy their tokens and load them in bits to ensure they load early enough before the upgrade since the tokens will not work when loaded after the deadline.
At the same time, he warned the customers to be cautious with fraudsters claiming to be KPC officials seeking to assist them at a fee. He noted that KPC will issue an official public statement regarding the upgrade and enough personnel will be dispatched to assist the public.
