Lawyers demand Sh1.9 billion in legal fees for election petitions from IEBC

The electoral body is demanded by lawyers Sh1.9 billion for legal fees for the disputes that ended in courts.

In a report, the IEBC engaged a battery of lawyers who represented it in the Supreme Court for Sh569 million. IEBC Chief Executive Officer Hussein Marjan pleads with Parliament to ensure the availability of funds from the Treasury to settle the pending bills.

The CEO had appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chaired by John Mbadi The report before parliament attributes the hefty bill to its decision to engage 38 law firms during the legal duel at the Supreme Court pitting President William Ruto against the opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The lawyers were hired to defend the body following a suit lodged by Raila Odinga who challenging President William Ruto’s win was. In the report, A law firm associated with former AG Githu Muigai is demanding Sh38.4 million, Abdikadir Hussein Mohammed Sh26.7 million, while IKM (Karori Karori Kamau SC) Sh26.7 million.

The firms of Wekesa and Simiyu Advocates, Tiego Advocates, Manyonge and Wanyama Advocates, Murigu, Rigoro Advocates, Garane and Somane Advocates, S.M Kilonzo Associates, Mukele Moni and Company Advocates, Dr Mutiubwa Law and Kibicho and Company Advocates demand Sh20.9 million each.

Another Sh4.85 billion, is being sought by suppliers and service providers and that with 90 per cent of the pending bills amounted to legal fees.
