Uplifting talents
In a celebration of talents and resilience, learners with mental disabilities from Igembe south in Meru County displayed impressive skills and abilities in sport activities which included football for both boys and girls, volleyball and handball.
The function which saw participation of over 50 learners with mental disabilities provided an opportunity for the learners to showcase their prowess and identify their exceptional abilities and skills in sporting activities. The event held at Kathima comprehensive school brought together learners from Kathima, Athiru, Antubochiu, Kilalai special units and Athi special school.
Organised by the Igembe South coordinator for special needs education, the event focused on highlighting the talents of students with intellectual disabilities and providing them with a platform to build their self-esteem, confidence, engage in physical activities, build friendship and foster community spirit.
Speaking during the launch of the event at Kathima Comprehensive School the Igembe South coordinator for special needs education Francis Gitonga underscored the importance of sports among learners with special needs noting that it is a tool for inclusion and an avenue for developing social skills and breaking barriers.
“It is crucial for all our learners including those with disabilities to be included in all aspects of education including participating in co-curricular activities to recognise their exceptional potential, skills and abilities,” Gitonga noted.
Echoing the sub-county SNE coordinator’s sentiments, Madam Purity Karegi, special needs teacher at Kathima special unit said that learners with intellectual disabilities need to feel valued and equal with the regular learners and this can only be achieved through offering extracurricular programs that gives them an opportunity to participate in a wide range of social activities to explore their interests.
The occasion highlighted the talents and potential among mentally challenged students with each school producing at least two outstanding students to advance to the county competition.
