Chief arrested

Ethics and Ant-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives have arrested a senior assistant chief in Kilifi County over a bribery crime, he allegedly committed about five years ago.

The officers nabbed Mr. Nicodemus Mwayele, the Shella Senior Assistant Chief in Malindi town location, Malindi Sub County, for allegedly receiving Sh15,000 from Kazungu Charo Mulambi to help resolve a land dispute at Muyeye Trading Centre.

Mwayele has been out on a Sh50,000 cash bail as the commission awaited the approval of the charges by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP).

Upper Coast EACC Manager Ben Murei told journalist that the suspect demanded Sh20,000 from the complainant who was then given Sh15,000 to hand over to the administrator, leading to the initial arrest on September 2, 2019.

“The suspect is a senior assistant chief in shella Sub location. He asked a bribe over a land case from a man called Kazungu Charo. We gave Charo Sh15,000 which he handed over to the suspect with an agreement that he (Mwayele) will get the balance after the job is done,” narrated Murei.

Mwayele was later arraigned before Malindi Senior Resident Magistrate Olga Onalo who deferred the plea taking to Wednesday before a gazetted anti-corruption judicial officer as she (Onalo) is not.

Onalo at the same time released Mr. Mwayele on the cash bail of Sh50,000 he earlier deposited.
