Impeachment
Mau Mau Original Trust in Narok has called on Kenyans to maintain peace as the country adjusts to changes in governance at the presidency following the announcement of a new Deputy President.
The trust’s chairman Daniel Kamau said the decision by the Senate to oust the immediate former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should be respected by the people so that the country can move forward. Kamau, who initially supported Gachagua and strongly opposed his impeachment, changed tone and said the President William Ruto has given the country a credible Deputy President who is capable of holding the second highest seat in the country.
The Mau Mau trust chairman said the debate on the removal of the former Deputy President has consumed a lot of time in the National Assembly and Senate and his removal paves way for other discussions that build the nation. “Let us allow the National Assembly and Senate to discuss other important issues that make the life of the common mwananchi better,” he continued.
He pleaded with the immediate former Deputy President’s supporters to accept the senate outcome and maintain peace as they await the 2027 General Election. However, a section of residents in Narok felt that Gachagua was not granted a fair hearing as he fell sick a few minutes before he was scheduled to defend himself in the Senate.
Ben Kisaika, a trader in Narok town, blamed both the National Assembly and the Senate claiming they failed to listen to the will of the people on the ground before going ahead to impeach Gachagua. “I doubt if both houses took into consideration the public participation forums’ outcome. Many counties had opposed the removal from office of the Deputy President,” said Kisaika.
His sentiments were echoed by Jerry Ann Korir, a fruit vendor, who called on the courts to save the immediate former deputy president from impeachment. Korir, felt that the process was highly rushed as the former DP was not accorded enough time to defend himself as it should have been the case.
