Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has launched free school milk for Early Childhood Development and Education Program (ECDE) Centers in Machakos dubbed ‘Maziwa ya mama, feeding the future’.
The Governor, while speaking at Kyemutheke Primary in Machakos County during the launch of the Maziwa ya mama free milk, said that it is a one of a kind project that aims to feed, energize and enhance the health of the children.
Wavinya said the free milk is for all ECDE centers in Machakos and is expected to increase enrolment, boost nutrition and improve health and wellbeing of the children in Machakos County.
“This milk does not only retain children in school, but also prevent malnutrition among children, especially those from vulnerable families,” noted the Governor.
She added that the milk will be given to children twice per week and delivered to all schools at no cost to the parents.
The caregivers and teachers in the ECDE centers were asked to ensure the milk is not used to serve selfish interests and that proper storage is important to avoid contamination and protect the health of the children.
Wavinya affirmed the milk project has elevated the economic status of dairy farmers, since they will be supplying the milk as they boost their earnings, which is a step towards the realization of ‘chakula mezani pesa mfukoni development agenda.
She noted that the Maziwa ya mama has increased employment opportunities for Machakos people and has provided business opportunities to investors in the transport sector as they will be delivering milk across the County.
