Mombasa united won their first match of the season after beating Samwest Blackboots 2-1 in National Super League (NSL) match at the Serani Sports Ground.

Goals for Mombasa United came from Wilberfoce Lugogo and Yema Mwana while Samwest Blackboots got their consolation goal from their striker Simon Muhazi. Mombasa United dominated the first half of the match with missed cahnces before they netted their lead in the 25th minute when their captain Lugogo fired a long strong shot which Samwest keeper was unable to save.

United nearly doubled their lead in the 34 minutes when David Wanyama crossed the ball which met Salim Ramadhan who did not utilize the chance. Samwest had much improvement in the second half creating numerous chances forcing United to play defensively. Their effort worked when Simon Muhazi scored a freekick into the top right corner in the 56th minute to equalize.

Yema Mwana, former Coastal Union player, retained their lead 10 minute later after connecting a pass from Ramadhan Mwanzia to score. Mombasa United coach, Swaleh Kinero, praised his boys for sticking to the plan despite of some mistake they made.

“I am happy that today we dominated our opponents more than we did on our previous match. So right now, we shift our minds to our next game against Naivas and we hope to get positive result from the game,” said Kinero. Samwest Blackboots Coach, Andera Ongawe, expressed his disappointment that the plan they made to approach the game was unsuccessful.

“The plan did not work and that is why we had to make changes by making early substitutions. When we return during the second half the plan was working and we equalized but our opponent got a counter and that how they defeated us,” clarified Ongawe. Mombasa United will next week travel to Machakos to face Naivas while Samwest Blackboots will host Darajani Gogo on Sunday.
