Residents of the Gichugu constituency are set to profit from the opening of a Technical Vocational College that will grant certificates and diplomas in various technical subjects.
Gichugu Technical and Vocational Training situated in Gariama ward, Kabari sublocation, Gichugu constituency, Kirinyaga East sub county will accommodate 3,000 learners according to the Principal, Joseph Kimemei.
Kimemei has assured learners who are set to join the institution they will get the best skills from the college since the government has provided all the equipment needed with professionals from different fields as instructors who will be of help to learners.
Additionally, he said, the school aims to become a mechanical engineering centre of excellence.”It’s my call to all parents all over the county to enroll their children with us here at Gichugu Technical and Vocational Training. We are also enrolling those with skills but don’t have a certificate that proves they are well equipped with the said skills. We have received massive positive feedback from the community since the day we opened doors for registration. Over 500 learners have so far registered,” Kimemei said.
Geoffrey Kariuki Nduru, the Chair, Gichugu Constituency NG-CDF, said there has been good cooperation between the office of the area Member of Parliament and the institution. Kariuki echoed the principal’s calls, urging parents to take advantage of the institution and use it fully by registering their children for them to be self-reliant in the future.
He added that the prospective learners will also benefit from the Gichugu bursary channeled through the office of the area Member of Parliament.
“The school will attract investors from different parts of the country, so it’s my call to residents to continue embracing the institution. There will be more development coming in the area, as we have seen before from different parts of the world where such projects are set. Cultural diversity is another thing we are going to benefit from in the institution, hence promoting national integration,” he said.
Johnson Mbogo Giriama, a resident, said he has benefited directly from the school by being employed as a mason, thus enabling him to run his daily activities with the money he gets from the job. Mbogo called on the government to set up more projects in the interior parts of the country so as to benefit those living in rural areas.
“Technical courses are the in thing now, unlike in the past when technical courses were seen as useless, but with the development we have in the country, there has always been huge demand for technical courses,” he explained. Mbogo called upon the girl child to take advantage of this course, saying that being in the technical field, ladies with technical skills are always given the first priority.
He called on parents and youths to take advantage of the TVET, saying once people are equipped with skills, there will be fewer cases of idleness, minimizing drug abuse and youth engaging in criminal activities.
