Motorists plying the Nakuru-Eldoret highway have been urged to exercise extra caution in a bid to reduce the occurrence of road accidents.
Speaking to KNA, the Molo Deputy sub-county police commander, Elizabeth Murgor, noted that accident prone black spots have been well identified by the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) but unfortunately accidents are still being experienced at such points.
Murgor gave her sentiments after one person died and five sustained serious injuries on Monday after the matatu they were traveling in rammed into a trailer heading in the same direction at Jolly farm area in Sachang’wan. The deceased who is yet to be identified is lying at the Molo sub-county hospital mortuary while those who sustained injuries are undergoing treatment in the same facility.
According to the sub county police commander, this occurrence that happened as a result of over speeding could have been avoided but most drivers do not pay attention to key road signs that indicate speed limits, black spots among other instructions.
Last week, five people lost their lives at Salgaa area along the same highway after the matatu they were traveling in hit the rear of a mobile trailer that disappeared soon after the incident. Eight people who sustained serious injuries were rushed to Nakuru county and referral hospital while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the same facility morgue pending identification.
According to National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), in the past four months, the country has lost 1,400 people in separate accidents
