Multi-agency team seize counterfeit Heinekene beer and bhang

Crackdown

A Multiagency team comprising NACADA, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), the police, KEBS and public health on Wednesday raided several bars and drug den where they recovered several bottles/cans of Heinekene beer and bhang rolls.

According to Wangui Gachoka, the Northeastern regional manager for NACADA the exercise that started at 5.30 pm is part of the ongoing inspection of bars, sensitization drive on illicit brews and drugs crackdown.

Gachoka said that the exercise that lasted for 3 hours saw several bars and pubs inspected for compliance within Garissa town.At Villapark bar and restaurant 48 bottles of 500ml counterfeit HEINEKENE were seized. At 3D bar and restaurant 24 bottles 500ml counterfeit bottles of Heinekene and 23 cans of 500ml were also seized.

At the infamous Heller joint the team recovered 5 stones of bhang and one suspect Ahmed Hassan Subow arrested. Also recovered hidden together with the bhang were sh500 in cash. He will be arraigned in court today.

Gachoka said that the crackdown on illicit brews and drugs is a continues and ‘will continue as long as the problem exists’.On Tuesday, the North Eastern regional commissioner John Otieno put on notice security officers operating bars and second-generation liquor shops as the government steps up the war against illicit brew, drugs and substance abuse in the region.

Otieno said over 53 non-compliant pharmacist and agro-vets have been closed in the region and over 500 litres of illicit brews have been destroyed.
