By Morris Githenya Murang’a County Assembly adjourned other businesses to deliberate on the crisis affecting the residents following increased risks of flooding and landslides.
In the motion by Kahumbu MCA Chefman Njoroge the members said there was need for Governor Irungu Kang’ata administration to fast track use of the Sh20 million allocated to the emergency fund to support those affected by the calamities.
The assembly heard that Murang’a is presently affected by floods, landslides and huge cracks on the roads.Already, KeNHA has ordered the closure of parts of Murang’a Kiria ini road following the effects of landslides.
Several tea farms have been affected by the landslides leaving a trail of destruction. “There is a need to establish a toll-free number for easy communication while the disaster management unit crews remain on a high alert to respond when alarm is raised,” said Njoroge.
The rain effects have been felt in Kiganjo village in Mathioya where six people among them three children perished on Sunday night after their homes were buried under the debris.
Supporting the debate, Muguru MCA Moses Muchiri said there was a need for the government to help the residents’ facing challenges. “With the increased rains there is alot of challenges being experienced by the people among them the aged and persons with special needs,” said Muchiri..
