In a bid to boost safety of residents and create a platform for livelihood diversification, the County Government has installed solar-powered street lights at Nakururum and Aposta villages of Songot Ward, Turkana West Sub County.

The two locations have a total of 25 masts, of 200 watts each, to provide electric power at night to light up the streets. According to the project supervisor, Engineer Samuel Ebei, the solar-powered streetlights are expected to assist in curbing crime rates, allow businesses to operate for longer hours and improve the overall quality of life of the area’s residents.

Speaking during an inspection of the solar light project in the area, Eng. Ebei said that the program was part of the greater initiative by the county to tap into the abundant solar energy for productive use. Residents of the two locations expressed gratitude and confirmed that the streetlights were indeed going to transform their lives.

A resident, Alice Halima, said that the lights would also help to keep away wild animals that have been a menace to their livestock over the years. She also pointed out that businesses could now operate till late for the benefit of the residents.

The solar streetlights will also benefit institutions in the area, including health and education facilities, boosting their accessibility at night. The inspection of the streetlight was also conducted by Gedion Kipyegon (Procurement) Hellen Lomojong (Accounts) and Josphat Lauren.
