Farmers specializing in coffee fetched Sh817 million after they auctioned their 20,281 bags of coffee at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE).
The auction had 20 local and international buyers receive fewer bags than the previous week’s 26,328 bags.
Three leading marketing agents Kirinyaga Slopes, Alliance Berries Limited, and NKPCU delivered 13,629 bags in the auction.
NCE Acting CEO Lisper Ndung’u said the marketing agents were Alliance Berries Limited sold 4,450 bags that fetched Sh 187.4 million, Kirinyaga Slopes 5,267 bags for Sh 216.5 million, and NKPCU 3,922 bags for Sh159.2 million.
“The premier grades at the auction, were 4,725 bags of AA that were sold for Sh 232 million for 9,073 bags of AB Sh 367.1 million, and 3,199 bags of grade C went for Sh99,963.6 million,” said Ms Ndung’u.
The produce was collected from 907 coffee cooperative societies and estates in the counties.
The best coffee was from Kii factory in Kirinyaga allied to Kirinyaga Slopes a bag of AA was bought at $463.
At Gathiru ini factory affiliated with Alliance Berries Limited, a bag of AA traded at $355.
In the dealers category, Kenyacof spent Sh209 million for 5,359 bags of coffee, while C Dorman bought 3,784 bags for Sh168 million.
Ibero Kenya bought 3,878 bags for Sh134.8 million, and Sasini spent Sh94 million to purchase 2,276 bags.
Kigumo MP Joseph Munyoro says the farmers are interested in better income from their produce.
“We need to explore new markets for our coffee to attract more returns to the farmers,” said Munyoro.
