Landslide

A massive landslide has again hit parts of Baringo North Sub County displacing 22 households and destroying farms, food crops and tree plantations.

The mudslide that occurred Monday night at Kapkwang village in Kabartonjo ward swept away houses and other essential facilities like latrines and water systems besides rendering the families homeless. The county head of disaster and response management Michael Baimet who visited the area to assess the magnitude of the destruction has advised the affected families to relocate to safer grounds to avert further losses.

Baimet who was accompanied by area MCA Simon Kiplagat assured the households whose livelihoods have been completely destroyed that the county government will supply them with foodstuffs and non-food items to alleviate their situation. Last week five people at Kasisit and Kapkombe sub locations in Saimo location died after a deadly landslide striked their areas following ongoing heavy rains that is pounding most parts of Baringo.

The mudslide that took place at night buried the victims after their houses were swept away downstream by huge debris with some of the bodies recovered far away. Last month, a section of Kasoiyo-Tenges-Eldama Ravine tarmac road was closed down after a landslide swept part of the tarmac at Borowonin area.

Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) official in charge of Baringo Central Danstan Nyachiro while announcing the closure which is still in force urged motorists plying the busy road to use alternative routes for the time being as urgent repairs are undertaken at the destroyed section.
