Parts of Kiambu experience earth tremor for a few seconds

Various places in Kiambu County including Lari, Kiamworia, Kiganjo ward, Gatundu south, Muthiga and also parts of Thika last night experienced earth tremor for a few seconds. Many families in these areas felt the tremor in their homes with some claiming to have seen their furniture sliding at around 8.33 p.m.

According to experts the estimated earthquake magnitude was 4.2 and its centre was 78kms southwest of Kikuyu at a depth of 10km under land.

They say earth tremor aftershocks occur minutes, days, weeks, and even months following an earthquake and thus warned area residents to watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines, and stay out of damaged buildings.

A total of 14 earthquakes with a magnitude of four and above have struck within 300 km of Kiambu, Kenya in the past 10 years. This translates to an average of one earthquake per year.

The most serious that had a magnitude of 4.8 was experienced on Mar 11, 2021 and struck 270 kilometers west of Kikuyu, at a depth of 10 km under land. Giving the weather forecast for Kiambu for the next one week, earlier yesterday, County Director of Meteorology Magdalene Gateri said cold and cloudy conditions were expected over several parts of the county starting Tuesday (yesterday).
