Police launch manhunt for suspected armed criminals in Marsabit town

Manhunt

An intense police manhunt for suspected armed criminals who shot and injured two youths last night in Marsabit Town is underway with an appeal to members of the public to volunteer information.

Marsabit county police commander Leonard Kimaiyo said the two victims of the half past midnight attack are recuperating at the Marsabit County Referral Hospital where they were taken for treatment. Mr Kimaiyo said the two aged 25 and 17 years had just dropped a friend at Karantina estate and were on their way back home when an unknown number of thugs waylaid them at SKM area.

“The victims say they saw a group of people, two of whom were armed with guns,” said the county police commander adding that the armed suspected criminals opened fire at the duo as they attempted to escape by doing a U-turn.  He added that preliminary investigations show that the attackers used a motorcycle to escape, adding that spent cartridges recovered at the scene indicate that they could have been armed with G3 rifles.

The injured who sustained gunshot wounds on the legs and hand are reportedly in a stable condition. Mr Kimaiyo added that a contingent of security officers including those from the directorate of criminal investigations (DCI) have been dispatched to track down the suspects and to recover the illegal firearms used to commit the crime.

He appealed to members of the public to volunteer any useful information in their possession concerning the incident to the authorities. “We shall not relent until the culprits are brought to justice and the illegal weapons are retrieved from wrong hands,” he said.

The police and other law enforcement agencies are on the alert to ensure that crime does not creep back into Marsabit town and the county as a whole so that wananchi can continue going about their daily chores uninterrupted.
