President William Ruto has urged Kenyans to plant trees in efforts to achieve the 15 billion trees mark in his 10-year tenure.
Ruto said in the next six months tree planting exercise will be a must with cabinet secretaries being in charge to ensure the achieving of the target to help in the mitigation of climate change.
Speaking in Karua Hill in Igikiro area, Murang’a during the National Tree Planting Day, Ruto said starting next week, the Cabinet Secretaries will be in charge where millions of trees will be planted.
He emphasised in fruit trees planting as the residents through Governor Irungu Kang’ata raised concerns over the increased monkeys destroying food crops.
“On the first day I am committed to ensure we shall plant 200 million trees and the said more than 200 million tree seedlings countrywide,” said the head of state.
The move by the President was lauded by Peter Ngugi, an environmentalist saying the nation was on the right track.
“This is the spirit that is needed to restore the environment after decades of mass destruction,” said Ngugi.
