Rachuonyo Youths urged to embrace fish farming

Homabay County Deputy Governor Joseph Oyugi Magwanga has advised area youths to engage in fish farming and agribusiness to improve their livelihood. Magwanga noted agriculture offer massive employment opportunities for the residents and especially the youth alongside transforming their lives.

The DG said white collar job were rare to come by and advised residents especially the youths to practice aquaculture for self-employment. He said agriculture has a huge potential to change the fortune of the youth and the country at large and encouraged farmers to invest in climate smart economy.

The official was speaking on behalf of Homabay county governor Gladys Wanga during Annual Aquaculture Day held at Kadongo market Rachuonyo East Sub County where the residents were also sensitized on the newly installed machine for processing fish and chicken feeds.

The day was organized by the Aquabusiness development programme (ABDP in collaboration with Homabay County Department for Blue economy, fisheries, mining and digital economy. The event show-cased collaborative efforts towards sustainable agriculture and economic development in the county, emphasizing the importance of climate resilience ventures to mitigate against adverse effects of climate change.

“ABDP is jointly funded by the government of Kenya and International fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) seeks to broaden and deepen the aquaculture value chain to increase the volume and value of fish and fish products produced and sold in the country,” said Michael Omondi, Homabay county ABDP Director.
