Due to floods caused by the ongoing heavy rains residents of Kugeria village in Kiambu county are asking for help after their homes and land were flooded with water and raw untreated sewage.

Kugeria Village which is located off Kiambu road and next to several gated estates have been affected by the effluent caused by blockage of sewage system due to excess rainwater that has caused untreated sewage to burst out the manhole covers.

The sewer mixed flood waters which has flown into the residents’ private homes, land and farms since 28th April 2024 is yet to be fixed, causing frustration and helplessness among the affected families, who are now forced to live with the health risk caused by the situation.

Frank Kamau a resident of Kugeria village expressed his frustrations calling on the government to come to their help before they contract water borne diseases. “I had cows, goats and chicken but I had to sell them all as they could have died due to the raw sewer flooding the area, I had also planted maize and beans in my three acres of land which is now all flooded with the sewer,” Said Kamau.

Patricia Mbugua a resident also said that the sewage water is flowing inside their homesteads and has since found its way to the main water supply connected by Nairobi water and sewerage company. “Our source of clean water has also been contaminated by the foul-smelling sewer water hence making it difficult for us to live here as we no longer have clean water for domestic use,” cited Mbugua.

The residents have since called upon the government to take action to curb the menace to avoid cholera outbreak in the area. According to NEMA County Director Mr Steven Wambua investigations have been launched to identify the leakage causing the sewer wastewater to flow to private homes.

“We have received the complaint and our officers have been working to ensure that the issue is resolved. I want to assure residents that if there is anyone who slept on their job, he or she will face the law,” stated Wambua.
